CNS Expert Conducts Arms Control Simulation at Tomsk State University

The program brought together students from all over Siberia for a week-long intensive nonproliferation course.

In the last week of August 2010, CNS Senior Research Associate Nikolai Sokov directed an arms control simulation as part of the fifth Summer Nonproliferation School, run by Tomsk State University and supported by Swedish Radiation Safety Authority. The program brought together students from all over Siberia for a week-long intensive nonproliferation course. This year the arms control exercise, which lasted a day and a half, simulated negotiation on a framework for multilateral nuclear arms reduction talks among all nuclear weapons states, including those outside the NPT. The simulation concluded successfully with an agreement on the establishment of a multilateral forum for arms reduction negotiations and a multilateral organization with participation of select non-nuclear states for data exchange and verification activities.

An article (in Russian) in Tomskie Novosti, Tomsk's local daily newspaper, provided detailed coverage of the simulation.
