Arms, Disarmament, and Influence:
International Responses to the 2010 Nuclear Posture Review
A Nonproliferation Review Breakfast Briefing event held on March 17, 2011 in Washington, DC.
Presentations by Stephen Schwartz, George Perkovich, Jane Vaynman, Thomas Fingar, Scott Sagan, and Edward L. Warner III*.
The 2010 Nuclear Posture Review states: "By demonstrating that we take seriously our NPT obligation to pursue nuclear disarmament, we strengthen our ability to mobilize broad international support for the measures needed to reinforce the non-proliferation regime and secure nuclear materials worldwide." But does the evidence support this assertion?
Speakers George Perkovich (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace),
Jane Vaynman (Harvard University),
Thomas Fingar (Stanford University), and
Scott Sagan (Stanford University)
will explore this question and discuss the findings of a special issue of the Nonproliferation Review, "Arms, Disarmament, and Influence: International Responses to the 2010 Nuclear Posture Review," which delved into the reactions of more than a dozen key countries in the nuclear nonproliferation regime to understand what impact, if any, changes in US nuclear weapons policy have had on their nuclear decision-making.
