The Impact of U.S. Arms Sales to Taiwan and Inclusion of Taiwan into TMD on Security and Stability in East Asia

Mu Changlin

Any US decision to sell advanced weapons systems and to include Taiwan in TMD will interfere in China’s internal affairs and violate China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It will also havea  negative impact on regional security and stability in East Asia. Mu Changlin lists four reasons for his argument. First, US arms sales to Taiwan and inclusion od Taiwan in TMD would seriously affect the development of US-China relations. Second, it will trigger a regional arms race. Third, it will pose a potential threat to security and stability in East Asia. Finally, it will lead to the establishment of a de facto military alliance between the United States and Taiwan. Mu concludes his article by urging the United States to abide by the three Sino-US Joint Communiques and its relevant commitments.

Mu Changlin is a senior research fellow with the China Institute of International Strategic Studies.
