Impact of Missile Proliferation on Stability in the Middle East and South Asia

Robert Einhorn

This paper outlines the state of missile proliferation and its effect on stability in the Middle East and South Asia.  It concludes that countries in East Asia are significant suppliers of missiles and missile technology and that East Asian countries are both  contributors to and a potential victims of these programs.  East Asian countries need to establish export controls and take other steps to curtail their contributions to missile programs, and to reduce the threat that extra-regional instability poses to East Asia itself.

Robert Einhorn is the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Nonproliferation.
