CNS Programs: EANP ConferenceU.S. Abstracts:Current Arms Control and Nonproliferation Issues in US-China Relations--A US PerspectiveEvan Medeiros This paper covers current arms control and nonproliferation issues in US-China relations, identifying common interests and areas of disagreement. The missile tests in North Korea and the nuclear tests in South Asia are discussed as well as missile proliferation in general, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), the Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty (FMCT), and the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The influence of current dynamics such as the satellite export debate and US domestic politics are also analyzed. The paper concludes that while differences between the United States and China over these issues are significant, they are not fundamental barriers to continued Sino-US cooperation on arms control and nonproliferation. Evan Medeiros was a Senior Research Associate at the East Asia Nonproliferation Project, Center for Nonproliferation Studies.
