On May 22, 2002, the Center for Nonproliferation Studies cosponsored an international seminar in Moscow entitled "International Cooperation on Russian Nuclear Submarine Dismantlement" with the Committee of Scientists for Global Security and the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy.  The purpose of the seminar was to discuss the status of the dismantlement of Russian nuclear submarines and to identify issues yet to be resolved.

The keynote speaker at the seminar was Deputy Minister of Atomic Energy Valeriy Lebedev, who called for additional international financial assistance to fund Russia's submarine dismantlement program.  Officials from the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the British Embassy in Moscow, the Russian Navy, Russian shipbuilding organizations, and NGO representatives gave presentations at the seminar on dismantlement-related topics.
