April 2008

The East Asia Nonproliferation Program (EANP) at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) has completed a translation of a very important book on Chinese political thinking that is well-regarded in China. Analysis of China's National Interests was written by Dr. Yan Xuetong, who holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley. He is now the Director of the Institute of International Studies at Qinghua University in Beijing. Dr. Yan is a well known scholar and often consults with the senior circles of the Chinese government. EANP was fortunate to have Dr. Yan as a visiting scholar in 1998.

Dr Yan's book, which was written thirteen years ago, is now being used as a textbook in many of China's most prestigious universities and in government schools such as the National Defense University and the Foreign Affairs College that trains Chinese diplomats. It has a significant influence on many of the emerging leaders in China and has won many awards in China.

This book provides scholars and analysts outside of China with insights into the changing way of thinking of China's most senior leaders. It also clearly establishes criteria for what are likely to determine much of China's future foreign policy and behavior in institutions like the United Nations.

The translation was undertaken, with the cooperation of Dr. Yan, by a number of graduate translators from MIIS and edited by Dr. Monte R. Bullard, Senior Associate at EANP.
