Nuclear Safeguards Policy

A new intensive summer course at the Monterey Institute of International Studies

STIPENDS AVAILABLE

The Monterey Institute of International Studies in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy's Next Generation Safeguards Initiative is pleased to announce a new intensive course Nuclear Safeguards Policy to be offered in June 2008. The course will provide the background knowledge and fundamental skills needed for careers in the control and accounting of nuclear materials. This two-week course will be facilitated by senior Monterey Institute staff and nonproliferation policy analysts from the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies with presentations by technical experts from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories and other leading specialists.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Concepts, objectives, and history of nuclear safeguards
  • Negotiation of safeguards agreements
  • Material accounting, containment, and surveillance
  • Open source safeguards information collection and analysis
  • Effectiveness and limitations of safeguards
  • Future development of safeguards

Dates of course: June 2-13, 2008

Location: Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California

Eligibility: Must be a currently enrolled graduate or upper-division undergraduate student or recent graduate of one of the following universities:

  • Monterey Institute of International Studies
  • Stanford University
  • University of California (any campus)

Cost: The course is available free of charge. All students accepted for the course will receive a stipend of $1,500 to cover the cost of travel and accommodations.

Enrollment and the number of stipends are limited!

Application Procedure:

Application forms for the course on nuclear safeguards are available on the CNS website [in Word format or PDF format] and should be accompanied by:
  • An official academic transcript
  • Letters of recommendations
  • A 500-word statement of purpose.
    The statement should explain past experience in nonproliferation issues and the relevance of the course to professional goals.
Interested students are encouraged to submit their applications to Edith Bursac by no later than 4:00 p.m. on April 18, 2008.
