Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and U.S. Department Of Energy (DOE)

The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy's Next Generation Safeguards Initiative is pleased to announce that four paid internships/fellowship positions are available during the 2008 summer semester at:

  • the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, CA); and/or
  • the U.S. Department of Energy (Washington, DC)

These positions are available during the summer semester to dedicated students who are interested in:

  • professional careers in nuclear safeguards;
  • enhancing their education and practical experience on actual nonproliferation and nuclear security issues as they are addressed at these organizations;
  • contributing to the capability of these organizations in performing their tasks and analyses related to nuclear safeguards.

Internships

Participants must attend a two-week intensive course on safeguards issues and policies scheduled to be held at the Monterey Institute of International Studies June 2-13, 2008.

Students selected for internships will be provided with stipends to cover basic subsistence costs (expenses for accommodations, meals, and incidentals during the internship) at $3,000 per month. LLNL, DOE, and CNS will provide mentorship and supervision during internships.

The duration of these internships is from June through August.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for these internships, applicants must be U.S. citizens and currently enrolled graduate or upper-division undergraduate students or recent graduates of one of the following universities:

  • Monterey Institute of International Studies

Selection

Selection for an internship will be based strictly on the individual merit of the candidate and the needs of the receiving organization. All participants are evaluated by the selection committee (CNS faculty and representative(s) from LLNL or DOE). Final selections will be dependent on the acceptance of candidates by the participating organizations. Selected candidates will be notified no later than April 30, 2008.
