Overview
The International
Organizations and Nonproliferation Program (IONP), directed by
Jean Du Preez supports the mission of
CNS by:
- developing practical policy options for the full implementation of the
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT); the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban
Treaty (CTBT); the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC); the Chemical
Weapons Conventions (CWC); existing and emerging nuclear weapons free zones; and
negotiations of a fissile material treaty,
- contributing to the capacity of international nonproliferation organizations
as they deal with emerging proliferation concerns and disarmament and arms
control treaty implementation,
- promoting substantive dialogue between governmental and non-governmental
sectors on nonproliferation, disarmament and arms control,
- training the next generation of policy experts in the field of
nonproliferation by providing on-site
internships for
MIIS graduate students at international nonproliferation organizations and
relevant U.S. Government departments.
- The IONP is also responsible for publishing the Inventory of International Nonproliferation Organizations and Regimes, a comprehensive guide to the goals, activites and memberships of international organizations, treaties, and agreements relevant to the nonproliferation and disarmament of weapons of mass destruction.
One of the key strengths of
the IONP activities over the years has been its record in promoting substantive
dialogue between policy makers and think tank experts on nonproliferation,
disarmament and arms control, in particular on the implementation of the NPT and
its associated regime through Track 1 and 2 diplomacy initiatives involving the
participation of key governmental practitioners and leading non-government
experts. These activities have particularly focused on generating support for
international nonproliferation and disarmament regimes through issue specific
workshops and seminars.
