CNS Programs: NISNP

View in Russian

The Newly Independent States Nonproliferation Program (NISNP) is dedicated to carrying out the mission of the CNS in Russia and the other Newly Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union. Since 1991, NISNP has worked to establish a multi-disciplinary community of nonproliferation specialists across the former Soviet Union. The program carries out several projects in the area of nonproliferation education, training, and outreach; facilitates integration of NIS specialists into the international nonproliferation community; conducts research on nonproliferation policy issues, and publishes timely material about current NIS proliferation developments. NISNP also maintains open-source databases for the Nuclear Threat Initiative, including NIS Country Profiles, and databases on Submarine Proliferation, NIS Nuclear Trafficking, and Civilian HEU Reduction and Elimination.

NISNP is directed by Cristina Chuen. NISNP staff members in Monterey include Kenley Butler, Lisa Donohoe, Anya Loukianova, Margarita Sevcik, Dr. Nikolai Sokov, Elena Sokova, and Dr. William Potter. Staff members Dauren Aben and Tanat Kozhmanov are based in the CNS office in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Dr. Sonia Ben Ouagrham, Alexander Melikishvili, and Robert Nurick work on NIS nonproliferation issues in the CNS office in Washington, D.C. During 2007-2008, NISNP has two postdoctoral fellows: Dr. Togzhan Kassenova and Dr. Sonja Schmid. NISNP also employs several graduate student research assistants, drawn from the Monterey Institute's student body, whose work for the program forms an integral part of their training in nonproliferation.
