CNS Programs: NISNP
 |
The Newly Independent States Nonproliferation Program (NISNP)
is dedicated to carrying out the mission of the CNS in
Russia and the other Newly Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union.
Since 1991, NISNP has worked to establish a multi-disciplinary community of
nonproliferation specialists across the former Soviet Union. The program carries
out several projects in the area of nonproliferation
education, training, and outreach; facilitates integration of NIS
specialists into the international nonproliferation community; conducts
research on nonproliferation policy issues, and
publishes timely material about current NIS proliferation developments.
NISNP also maintains open-source databases for the Nuclear Threat Initiative,
including
NIS Country Profiles, and databases on
Submarine Proliferation,
NIS Nuclear Trafficking, and
Civilian HEU Reduction and Elimination.
NISNP is directed by
Cristina Chuen. NISNP staff members in
Monterey include
Kenley Butler,
Lisa Donohoe,
Anya Loukianova,
Margarita Sevcik,
Dr. Nikolai Sokov,
Elena Sokova, and
Dr. William Potter.
Staff members Dauren Aben and
Tanat Kozhmanov are based in
the CNS office in
Almaty, Kazakhstan. Dr. Sonia Ben Ouagrham,
Alexander Melikishvili, and
Robert Nurick work on
NIS nonproliferation issues in the CNS office in
Washington, D.C.
During 2007-2008, NISNP has two postdoctoral fellows:
Dr. Togzhan Kassenova and
Dr. Sonja Schmid.
NISNP also employs several graduate student research assistants, drawn from the
Monterey Institute's student body,
whose work for the program forms an integral part of their
training
in nonproliferation.
