CNS Programs: NISNPAlmaty Office, KazakhstanIn August 1998, CNS established its NIS Representative Office (NISRO) in Almaty, Kazakhstan to facilitate CNS research, community-building, and outreach activities in the NIS and to provide a unique resource for nonproliferation specialists in the NIS. The office is staffed by Dauren Aben, executive director, and Tanat Kozhmanov, research assistant. NISRO organizes seminars and conferences in the former Soviet Union on various WMD and nonproliferation issues. Past events have been held for journalists, bioscientists, and export control and other government officials. The office has also conducted conferences for NISNP Core Group members. In addition, the Almaty office is involved in CNS research and publication projects, particularly in the production of the International Export Control Observer (in English and in Russian).
