NISNP Education, Training and Outreach

The NISNP conducts a number of educational, training, and outreach activities aiming at fostering a community of nonproliferation specialists in Russia and the NIS. These include the following:

  • The Visiting Fellows Program is designed to provide participants from the former Soviet Union with extensive training on nonproliferation and arms control issues.
  • The English Language and Nonproliferation Program (ELAN) combines intensive training in English language and nonproliferation for scientists and government officials.
  • The NISNP Core Group consists of NIS nonproliferation specialists and alumni of the NISNP Visiting Fellows and ELAN programs.
  • Train-the-Trainers programs assist faculty and instructors teaching or interested in teaching nonproliferation studies. Past events have included workshops in Moscow in 2002 and 2003 (at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations); Novouralsk, Urals region, in 2004; and Zheleznogorsk, the Siberian region, in 2005.
  • Cooperation with and assistance to universities and technical colleges targets the development, implementation, and teaching of nonproliferation courses. In 2003-2006, nonproliferation courses were introduced at Ozersk Technological Institute (branch) of Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, Novouralsk State Technical Institute, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Sarov Physics and Technical Institute, Seversk State Technical Academy, and Snezhinsk State Physics and Technical Academy.
  • Consulting services to Battelle and the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) to assist in the implementation of the MPC&A graduate program at MEPhI.
  • Critical Issues Forum is a special program for U.S. and Russian high schools.
  • Vestnik is a Russian-language newsletter for NISNP Core Group members and educators
