CNS Staff: Dr. Sonja SchmidDr. Sonja Schmid is a postdoctoral fellow at CNS. She holds a Ph.D. in Science & Technology Studies from Cornell University (2005). Her main area of research is the civilian nuclear energy sector, particularly in Russia, the NIS, and the former Soviet bloc countries. Her research focuses on reactor designs, technology transfer, organizations and training in the nuclear industry, and public perceptions of nuclear energy. Recent publications include "Nuclear Renaissance in the Age of Global Warming" (Bridges, 2006), "Celebrating Tomorrow Today: The Peaceful Atom on Display in the Soviet Union" (Social Studies of Science, 2006), and an article (forthcoming 2008) in a special issue of Osiris on the Soviet technical intelligentsia. Sonja has spent the past two years as a research associate at the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University, and she is working on a book manuscript tentatively entitled, "Producing Power: The Construction of a Civilian Nuclear Industry in the Soviet Union."
