CNS Branch Office: Washington, D.C.U.S.-Japan Non-Governmental Cooperation on International Arms Control and NonproliferationOn March 8, 2000, the governments of the United States and Japan established the U.S.-Japan Commission on Arms Control, Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Verification for official discussions to be conducted on a regular basis. In the Commission's founding statement, the two governments encouraged "non-governmental experts in both countries to undertake enhanced collaboration efforts in pursuit of the Commission's important goals." This project is designed to follow up on the charge of the two governments with the following objectives:
This project aims to contribute new approaches to policy problems not only by consciously freeing itself from the constraints frequently encountered by governments, but also by striving to involve in its activities various functional and regional specialists. The Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) of the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) will serve as the formal host on the U.S. side. Dr. Lawrence Scheinman, assisted by a senior advisory board, chairs this project. Other staff members include senior research associate and project manager Katsu Furukawa (katsu.furukawa@miis.edu) and research associate Kristin Thompson (Kristin.thompson@miis.edu).
