Inspectors supervise the destruction of one of Iraq's Al-Hussein ballistic
missiles, a range modified version of the Soviet-produced R-11 (Scud-B)
missile. The 650-kilometer range Al-Hussein, first flight-tested in February
1987, was used extensively by Iraqi forces in the
waning months of the Iran-Iraq war. During the infamous "War
of Cities" (1988), Iraq launched 189 missiles at Teheran. During
the Gulf War, some 80 Al-Husseins were fired against Saudi Arabia and Israel.
In total, UNSCOM supervised destruction of 48 Scuds
or its Al-Hussein derivative; Iraq's claim that it "unilaterally destroyed"
the remainder of its Scud/Al-Hussein missile force has been the source
of numerous verification problems over the last six years.
