UNSCOM Photo
An Iraqi engineer and technician look on as an UNSCOM team member inspects
an Iraqi-produced chemical warhead; the warhead was designed to be launched
by an Al-Hussein ballistic missile. Warhead canisters may be seen
on the left side of the picture and in the background. Iraq claims
to have produced 75 so-called "special warheads" (those capable of
carrying chemical or biological agents) in 1990; UNSCOM doubts the validity
of this number. Agent fill included sarin, a binary chemical agent,
anthrax, botulinum toxin, and aflatoxin. UNSCOM supervised destruction
of thirty chemical warheads; the Iraqis claim that the remaining
"special warheads" were unilaterally destroyed. An UNSCOM team
was sent to Baghdad in February 1998 specifically to address remaining
questions surrounding Iraq's design, production, and accounting of these
warheads.
