UNSCOM Photo
An UNSCOM inspector examines a tamper-proof "tag" on a short-range
ballistic missile known as the "FROG." Beginning in 1973, Iraq purchased
a number of these systems from the Soviet Union. These missiles are
now kept under monitoring by UNSCOM, and all known FROGs have been tagged
with a unique serial number. At least twice per year, UNSCOM requires
Iraq to "corral" a portion of its FROG force for inspection; the serial
numbers of the systems to be inspected are provided to Iraq shortly before
the inspection begins.
