The East Asia Nonproliferation Program (EANP) at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) has been engaged in nonproliferation training, education, database development and research since 1995. In 2000 and 2001, EANP organized two successful summer workshops aimed at promoting the teaching and research of arms control and nonproliferation in China. Twenty-five professors from top Chinese civilian and military academic institutions participated in the two workshops.

The highlight of the workshops was the development and refinement of course materials for teaching about arms control and nonproliferation. Designed as a "course in a box," these materials include lectures based on the Monterey Institute graduate course Security and Arms Control in Northeast Asia, supplementary readings for each lecture, and a comprehensive reading list on arms control and nonproliferation. The lectures and the supplementary readings are also available in Chinese. The teaching package can be used as is, but we encourage professors to modify and adapt it to suit their teaching styles and educational needs.

EANP will continue to support the workshop participants while also reaching out to a larger audience to promote education in arms control and nonproliferation. Our efforts include a regularly updated reading list (PDF), bibliographies on Chinese arms control and nonproliferation issues, collections of official documents in both English and Chinese (international organizations and governments), and academic analyses of arms control and nonproliferation issues. These materials are available via the internet, email, or by requesting hard copies and CD-ROMs. The CNS web site also disseminates timely information and analyses to support the broader East Asian arms control and nonproliferation community.
