Nuclear Submarine Dismantlement

left Russia with a dangerous legacy: more than 100 nuclear submarines that must be dismantled and disposed of without
causing environmental damage or increasing proliferation risks. While Russia has removed from active status 200 of its
244 Cold War-era submarines, it lacks the money and equipment to scrap them, and it cannot afford to adequately protect
the nuclear materials on these vessels as they await dismantlement.
