INTERNSHIPS
Summer Nonproliferation Internships

The Summer Undergraduate Internship in Nonproliferation Studies at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) is a paid internship. Interns will be compensated at the same rate as graduate research assistants ($9.00/hour) and will work with CNS staff members on substantive issues for one of the following Nonproliferation Programs:

    * Newly Independent States
    * East Asia
    * Chemical and Biological Weapons
    * International Organizations and Nonproliferation Program
    * Nonproliferation Education Program

CNS's research interests also cover Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Terrorism and regional nonproliferation issues including the Middle East and South Asia.

CNS Washington, DC Summer 2010 Internship

Application deadline: March 15.

The Washington, DC, office of the Monterey Institute's James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS-DC) is offering four- to five-month internships for individuals seeking professional experience and on-the-job training with the country's largest organization dedicated exclusively to education and analysis on limiting the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and advanced delivery systems.

Interns will be working alongside experts on nonproliferation, arms control, and regional security affairs, while sharpening their knowledge of the field and improving their research and writing skills. The internship program also provides the opportunity to learn how non-governmental organizations impact national and international foreign policy-making. Expectations for interns are high and successful applicants will have the opportunity to publish independent research through CNS publications and other outlets.

Summer Internships in Nuclear Safeguards Policy

Application Deadline: 4:00 p.m. on March 19, 2010!

The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) in cooperation with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and in support of the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration's Next Generation Safeguards Initiative, is pleased to announce the availability of up to six paid summer internships at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California.

Eligible students for this outstanding, competitive internship opportunity should demonstrate an interest in:

* pursuing a professional career in nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear safeguards;
* acquiring practical experience on nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards and security policy issues as they are addressed at US national laboratories;
* contributing to the capability of the national laboratories to perform and complete tasks and analyses related to nuclear safeguards.

The International Organizations and Nonproliferation Program (IONP) at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) is pleased to announce that internships/research fellowship positions are available during the 2010 fall and 2011 spring semesters at:

* the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Division of Public Information (Vienna);
* the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Department of Legal and External Relations (Vienna);
* the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Assistance and Protection Branch (The Hague);
* the United Nations Office at Geneva, Implementation Support Unit (ISU) of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological and Toxin Weapons and on Their Destruction (BWC) (fall only); and the Conference on Disarmament (spring only);
* the Organization for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America (OPANAL) in Mexico City (Spanish language only).

Arms Control Breakthrough in Monterey: U.S.-Russian SMART Treaty Signed

Two dozen Monterey Institute graduate students negotiated their own START follow-on treaty. Unlike their "real world" counterparts, the negotiators in Monterey signed an accord on December 5, 2009.

Monterey Institute Students Agree on Recommendations to the 2010 NPT Review Conference
Twenty six Monterey Institute graduate students and Visiting Fellows at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) participated in the Fall 2008 Arms Control Simulation course, designed to simulate negotiations at the 2009 Preparatory Committee for the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
