About this Database

The NAM database compiles the contributions made by the Non-Aligned Movement in multilateral fora dealing with disarmament and related issues since the inception of the Movement in 1961. All information gathered is based on primary sources such as Final Documents of intergovernmental meetings, country statements, working papers, and UN official records.

The database identifies key disarmament and related issues that NAM dealt with in multilateral fora as well as through NAM Heads of States Summits from 1961 to date.

The database is an initiative of the International Organizations and Nonproliferation Program (IONP), James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. The database was founded in November 2011 and the preliminary phase of development focused on the NAM Heads of State Summits was completed in April 2012. The database continues to grow as more documents and analysis is added to other disarmament fora.

The concept of the database, as well as its scope and content, originated from Ambassador Aruni Wijewardane, who serves as Director IONP and Diplomat-in-Residence at the CNS. Work related to the database received the full encouragement of the Director of the CNS, Dr. William Potter. The NAM database is maintained by the following CNS staff and research assistants:

  • Himayu Shiotani, Research Associate, CNS
  • Amanda Moodie, Research Associate, CNS
  • Jessica Bufford, MANTPS Candidate, December 2012
  • Lovely Umayam, MANPTS Candidate, May 2013
  • Shannon Brooks, MANPTS Candidate, December 2012
  • Jonathan Fox, MANPTS Candidate, May 2013
  • Sophie Manoukian, MANPTS Candidate, May 2013

Many thanks to those who worked to develop this idea, including Karim Kamel, Adam Weber, Jerry Davydov, Luejit Tinpanga, and Ryan Vigneux.

The Task Force is also greatly indebted to Eduardo Fujii (Senior Programmer and Analyst, CNS) and David Steiger (Senior Web and Desktop Publishing Specialist, CNS) for the web design expertise and technical assistance provided through the construction process. The database is a work in progress.
