61st Session of the UN First Committee

Disarmament and Development

 

(A/C.1/61/L.8, Para 1) Stresses the central role of the United Nations in the disarmament-development relationship, and requests the Secretary-General to strengthen further the role of the Organization in this field, in particular the high-level Steering Group on Disarmament and Development, in order to assure continued and effective coordination and close cooperation between the relevant United Nations departments, agencies and sub-agencies; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.8, Para 2) Requests the Secretary-General to continue to take action, through appropriate organs and within available resources, for the implementation of the action programme adopted at the 1987 International Conference on the Relationship between Disarmament and Development; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.8, Para 3) Urges the international community to devote part of the resources made available by the implementation of disarmament and arms limitation agreements to economic and social development, with a view to reducing the ever-widening gap between developed and developing countries; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.8, Para 4) Encourages the international community to achieve the Millenium Development Goals and to make reference to the contribution that disarmament could provide in meeting them when it reviews its progress towards this purpose in 2006, as well as to make greater efforts to integrate disarmament, humanitarian and development activities; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.8, Para 5) Encourages the relevant regional and subregional organizations and institutions, non-governmental organizations and research institutes to incorporate issues related to the relationship between disarmament and development in their agenda and, in this regard, to take into account the report of the Group of Governmental Experts on the relationship between disarmament and development; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.8, Para 6) Requests the Secretary-General to report to the General Assembly at its sixty-second session on the implementation of the present resolution;

(A/C.1/61/L.7, Para 2) Call upon States to adopt unilateral, bilateral, regional and multilateral measures so as to contribute to ensuring the application of scientific and technological progress within the framework of international security, disarmament and other related spheres, without detriment to the environment or to its effective contribution to attaining sustainable development;

(A/C.1/61/L.6, Para 1) Reaffirms multilateralism as the core principle in negotiations in the area ofdisarmament and non-proliferation with a view to maintainingand strengthening universal norms and enlarging their scope; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.6, Para 2) Also reaffirms multilateralism as the core principle in resolving disarmament and non-proliferation concerns; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.6, Para 3) Urges the participation of all interested States in multilateral negotiations on arms regulation, non-proliferation and disarmament in a non-discriminatory and transparent manner; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.6, Para 5) Calls once again upon all Member States to renew and fulfil their individual and collective commitments to multilateral cooperation as an important means of pursuing and achieving their common objectivesin the area of disarmament and non-proliferation; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.6, Para 7) Takes note of the report of the Secretary-General containing the replies of Member States on the promotion of multilateralism in the area of disarmament and non-proliferation, submittedpursuant to resolution 60/59; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.6, Para 8) Requests the Secretary-General to seek the views of Member States on the issue of the promotion of multilateralism in the area of disarmament and non-proliferation and to submit a report thereon to the General Assembly at its sixty-second session; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.6, Para 9) Decides to include in the provisional agenda of its sixty-second session the item entitled “Promotion of multilateralism in the area of disarmament and non-proliferation”. 

 

NAM Involvement and Contributions

 

(A/C.1/61/L.4, Para 2) Requests the Open-ended Working Group to hold an organizational session in order to set the date for its substantive sessions in 2007 and to submit a report on its work, including possible substantive recommendations, before the end of the sixty-first session of the General Assembly; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.4, Para 3) Requests the Secretary-General, within existing resources, to provide the Open-ended Working Group with the necessary assistance and services as may be required to discharge its tasks; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.5, Para 3) Calls upon those States that continue to maintain reservations to the 1925 Geneva Protocol to withdraw them; 

 

(A/C.1/61/L.5, Para 4) Requests the Secretary-General to submit to the General Assembly at its sixty-third session a report on the implementation of the present resolution.

Nuclear Weapon Convention

(A/C.1/78/L.8, Para 3) Endorses the wide support expressed at the high-level meeting for a comprehensive convention on nuclear weapons;

(A/C.1/78/L.8, Para 4) Calls for the urgent commencement of negotiations in the Conference on Disarmament on effective nuclear disarmament measures to achieve the total elimination of nuclear weapons, including, in particular, on a comprehensive convention on nuclear weapons; (A/C.1/78/L.8, Para 5) Decides to convene, in New York, on a date to be decided later, a United Nations high-level international conference on nuclear disarmament to review the progress made in this regard;

(A/C.1/78/L.4, Para 1) Stresses the central role of the United Nations in the relationship between disarmament and development, and requests the Secretary-General to strengthen further the role of the Organization in this field, in particular the high-level Steering Group on Disarmament and Development, in order to ensure continued and effective coordination and close cooperation between the relevant United Nations departments, agencies and subagencies;
