(NPT/CONF.2020/PC.III/WP.12, Para 38) The Group of Non-Aligned States Parties to the Treaty welcomes the multilateral efforts towards nuclear disarmament and the total elimination of nuclear weapons. The Group took note of the adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on 7 July 2017 at the United Nations conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination. It is hoped that, when entered into force, the Treaty would contribute to furthering the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons.

It is hoped that the Treaty would contribute to furthering the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons.

The Group took note of the adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on 7 July 2017 at the United Nations conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination; its entry into force on 22 January 2021; and the convening of the first Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, held from 21 to 23 June 2022, at which a declaration and an action plan were adopted. It is hoped that the Treaty would contribute to furthering the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons. The members of the Group of Non-Aligned States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons are fully committed to its implementation and are engaging constructively in the preparation for the second Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons towards achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.
