BASIC FACTS

The Arab Republic of Egypt is situated in northeast Africa linked to the Middle East via the Sinai Peninsula, with the Mediterranean Sea north of the country, Libya to the West, Sudan to the south, Israel and the Red Sea to the east. Egypt is a semi-presidential republic with unicameral legislature that gained its independence in 1953.

Capital: Cairo

According to the IAEA, Egypt has two nuclear research reactors: the first began operation in 1961 and the second in 1998. Egypt announced in 2018 the upcoming construction of a 4,800 megawatt (MW) nuclear power plant in El Dabaa via cooperation with Russia, which is scheduled to be up and running by 2026.
