Country Profile: United Arab Emirates

BASIC FACTS

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a constitutional monarchy and federation of seven emirates located on the southeast end of the Arabian Peninsula, bordered by Saudi Arabia and Oman. The vast majority of its population are expatriates, drawn by one of the largest oil and natural gas reserves in the world and consequently a relatively strong economy.

Capital: Abu Dhabi

There are no nuclear research reactors in the UAE. The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is currently under construction and will be the first such plant on the Arabian Peninsula. Barakah will contain four pressurized water reactors that are expected to produce some 5600MW of power and become operational by 2020. The power plant is the result of a contract between the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and the Korea Electric Power Corporation, concluded in 2009.
