Country Profile: Venezuela

BASIC FACTS

Venezuela is a Member Country of the NAM Movement since 1989 

Officially the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Venezuelais a federal presidential republicsituated in Northern South America, bordering the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. 

Capital: Caracas

Venezuela does not currently operate any nuclear power plants, despite having sought to pursue nuclear technologies in the past. In 2018, Venezuela signed a Country Programme Framework (CPF) with the IAEA to receive medium-term planning of technical cooperation and support from the IAEA in key sectors and areas of national importance to the country. Specifically, these are: nuclear radiation safety and security, food and agriculture, health and nutrition, water and environment, energy and industry, and human resource development. Under the CPF, which covers the period from 2018 through 2025, Venezuela will receive IAEA-assisted transfer of nuclear technology and resources directed at supporting national development goals.  

Venezuela is also a part of a Regional Cooperation Agreement with the IAEA and other Latin American and Caribbean countries, through which it exchanges technical and economic cooperation to advance peace and development. 

Venezuela has signed, ratified, and enforced the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in September of 2017, March of 2018, and January of 2021, respectively.
