BASIC FACTS

Officially the Republic of El Salvador, El Salvadoris a presidential republicsituated in the Caribbean, Central America, bordering the North Pacific Ocean. 

Capital: San Salvador

It has been reported that El Salvador is currently pursuing a large expansion of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in the country. Recently, El Salvador has engaged in several technical cooperation agreements and partnerships with the IAEA to strengthen the safe and secure use of the peaceful applications of nuclear technology. In early 2023, the IAEA undertook a mission in El Salvador to advise various ministries on the work surrounding the expansion and safe handling of nuclear applications – such as ionizing radiation – to benefit the country’s publichealth, agricultural, and sanitation sectors, among others.  

El Salvador has signed, ratified, and enforced the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in September of 2017, January of 2019, and January of 2021, respectively.
