BASIC FACTS
Paraguay is anObserver Country of the NAM Movement
Officially the Republic of Paraguay, Paraguayis a presidential republicsituated in Central South America.
Capital: Asunción
Paraguay does not currently operate any nuclear power plants but has engaged in IAEA-led technical assistanceto help protect the country’s first irradiator for research uses, which has applications for Paraguay’s health and agriculture sectorssuch as in tissue irradiation, blood irradiation, plant breeding, and food safety. The facilities operating radiation technologies have receivedstrategic guidance by IAEA technical experts, who have supported Paraguay in the establishment and strengthening of physical protection measures at the site.
Paraguay has signed, ratified, and enforced the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in September of 2017, January of 2020, and January of 2021, respectively.
