Country Profile: Tajikistan (Observer)

BASIC FACTS

The Republic of Tajikistan is a landlocked, central Asian country bordered by Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China. Tajikistan became an independent sovereign state in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and is today a presidential republic.

Capital: Dushanbe

There are no nuclear power plants or research reactors located in Tajikistan.

Under the Soviet Union, uranium ore was mined in the Chkalovsk region of Tajikistan. Mining was stopped in 1992, and IAEA records show that both known uranium deposits in the country have been depleted.
