Uruguay is anObserver Country of the NAM Movement
Officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, Uruguayis a presidential republicsituated in Southern South America, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean.
Capital: Montevideo
Uruguaydoes not currently operate any nuclear power plants, research reactors, or fuel storage facilities, possessing only medical and industrial installations that leverage the use of radiation technology to providefor key industry sectors, such as health, agriculture, and forensics. Uruguay has implemented comprehensive national legislation and frameworks for governing the safe uses of radiation technology, supported by the Law on Protection and Radiation Safety Nr. 19.056 and the National Regulatory Decree 270. Uruguay has also participated in IAEA-led workshops on addressing civil liability for nuclear damage to assure the prompt availability of resources and funds to compensate for any nuclear- and radiological-related risks.
Uruguay has signed, ratified, and enforced the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in September of 2017, July of 2018, and January of 2021, respectively.
