Country Profile: Uruguay (Observer)

BASIC FACTS

The Oriental Republic of Uruguay is a country located in southeast South America, bordered by Brazil and Argentina. Uruguay won its independence between 1811 and 1828 and is today a democratic constitutional republic.

Capital: Montevideo

There are currently no nuclear power plants or operational research reactors in Uruguay.

In 1964 the Center for Nuclear Research in Malvin Norte purchased a research reactor from the United States which became operational in 1978. However, it was decommissioned upon the discovery of corrosion in 1985, and all nuclear fuel was removed. In 1988 Uruguay began discussion with Canada to construct a nuclear power plant, but popular opposition ended the negotiations.

Since 1997 it is illegal in Uruguay to produce nuclear energy.
