BASIC FACTS
Colombia is a Member Country of the NAM Movement since 1983
Officially the Republic of Colombia, Colombia is a presidential republicsituated in Northern South America, bordering the Caribbean sea and the North Pacific Ocean.
Capital: Bogota
Since joining the IAEA,Colombia has worked in close collaboration with IAEA technical officials to expand and unlock the peaceful applications of nuclear science, under authorities such as the Colombian Geological Service (SGC).
Many projects surrounding nuclear research are overseen by the SGC, which advises the Colombian government on the safe and peaceful uses of nuclear materials and facilities. For example, with the support of the IAEA, the Colombian Geological Survey and the Ministry of Mines and Energy have explored how nuclear energy can capacitate better water management, food and safety, and nuclear medicine.Currently, Colombia does not operate a nuclear power reactor, but operates one research reactor managed by the SGC – the IAN-R1.
Colombia has signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in August of 2018, but has not yet ratified it.
