BASIC FACTS
Haiti is a Member Country of the NAM Movement since 2006
Officially the Republic of Haiti, Haitiis a semi-presidential republicsituated in the Caribbean, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean.
Capital: Port-au-Prince
Haitidoes not operate any nuclear power plantsbut has benefited from technical cooperation support from the IAEA surrounding the implementation of the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, particularly to advance nutrition and health for Haiti’s population. Under this technical support, Haiti has leveraged nuclear power to improve crop productivity, offer radiotherapy service for patients, and evaluate many environmental conditions in support of the country’s nutrition goals.
Most recently, in 2020, the IAEA has reinforced its safeguard work in Haiti by exchanging, with Haitian government authorities, official letters of commitmentto slightly amend the IAEA’s Small Quantities Protocol in the country, thereby strengtheningIAEA safeguards provisions across all of Haiti’s management of small-quantities nuclear and radiological materials.
Haiti has signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in September of 2022, but has not yet ratified it
