The Republic of Indonesia is located on the Equator, between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Indonesia shares its land border with Malaysia to the north, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the east. Indonesia shares maritime borders with Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Palau, and Australia. The Republic of Indonesia is a presidential republic that gained its independence in 1945.

Capital: Jakarta

President Sukarno of Indonesia was one of the five founding leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement. The headquarters of the Non-Aligned Movement are located in Jakarta, demonstrating the centrality of the Indonesian state to the NAM ideals.

Indonesia has three nuclear research reactors in Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Serpong that are operated by the National Nuclear Energy Agency of Indonesia (BATAN).

Indonesia has long considered large-scale nuclear power development. In 2014 BATAN announced site investigations to consider the feasibility of constructing over 20 units. The National Nuclear Energy Agency of Indonesia plans to have up to four large reactors online by 2025.
