BASIC FACTS

Jamaica is a Member Country of the NAM Movement since 1970 

Jamaicais a parliamentary democracy island under a constitutional monarchy situated in the Caribbean.

Capital: Kingston

Jamaica operates the Caribbean’sonly nuclear research reactor, the 20kW SLOWPOKE, which has been operational for nearly 35 years, supplying Jamaica’s nuclear research applications such as neutron activation analysis for uses in agriculture, the environment, and the health sector. According to the IAEA, Jamaica has been a model case for nuclear safety, security, and safeguards regulation, recently launching an independent regulatory body – the Hazardous Substances Regulatory Authority (HRSA) – to govern the country’s research reactor’s activities while ensuring the safety and security of all nuclear materials and operations therein.

Jamaica has signed, ratified, and enforced the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in December of 2017, October of 2020, and January of 2021, respectively.
