BASIC FACTS
The Republic of Azerbaijan is a landlocked country in the South Caucasus, located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Azerbaijan borders Iran to the south, Armenia to the west, Georgia to the northwest, Russia to the north, and is bound by the Caspian Sea to the east. Azerbaijan is a unitary semi-presidential republic that proclaimed its independence in 1991, shortly before the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Capital: Baku
Azerbaijan does not currently have any nuclear power plants, nuclear research reactors, or uranium mines.
Azerbaijan has one radioactive waste facility, known as Izotop and located 30 km from Baku.
