Country Profile: Mali

BASIC FACTS

The Republic of Mali is a landlocked country in Western Africa that borders Algeria to the northeast, Niger and Burkina Faso to the southeast, Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea to the south, and Senegal and Mauritania to the west. Mali is a semi-presidential representative democratic republic that gained its independence in 1960.

Capital: Bamako

Mali does not possess any nuclear power plants or research reactors.

Mali has a uranium deposit located in its southwest region, called Falea. The mine was discovered in 1970 and is used mainly for copper and silver mining. Uranium is produced only as a co-product.
