Country Profile: Niger

BASIC FACTS

The Republic of Niger is a large, landlocked country in West Africa bordered by Libya, Chad, Nigeria, Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Algeria. Niger is one of the poorest developing countries in the world, with one of the largest populations in Africa. Niger is a semi-presidential republic that gained its independence in 1960.

Capital: Niamey

Niger does not possess any nuclear research reactors or power plants. However, the country contains one of the world’s largest uranium ore deposits and has contributed over 5% of the global uranium mining production since 1971. The French Atomic Energy Commission, now Orano, has continued to manage uranium mining in Niger despite Niger’s independence from France in 1960.
