Officially the Republic of Panama, Panamais a presidential republicsituated in Central America, bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean.

Capital: Panama City

Panama does not currently operate any nuclear power plants but has benefited from IAEA technical cooperation in leveraging the peaceful applications of nuclear and radiological technology. With IAEA support, experts in Panama have learned how to use nucleonic gauges to model the movements of sediments in the Panama Canal, which can impact the commercial flows between the Atlantic and the Pacific. By leveraging radiation technologies to track sediments interactions, Panamahelps ensure that the movement of people and goods – assessed at being carried by over 800,000 ships per year – is not disrupted. Panama has also been an active participant of IAEA-led efforts to strengthen nuclear security and radiation safety in Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Panama has signed, ratified, and enforced the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in September of 2017, April of 2019, and January of 2021, respectively.
