BASIC FACTS

Peru is a Member Country of the NAM Movement since 1973 

Officially the Republic of Peru, Peruis a presidential republicsituated in Western South America, bordering the South Pacific Ocean. 

Capital: Lima

Peru does not operate any nuclear power plantsbut operates two research reactors managed by the Peruvian Institute for Nuclear Energy (IPEN), the RP-10 and the RP-0 reactors.3The former is a pool-type research-production reactor developed by the Peruvian National Commission of Atomic Energy, and the latter is a tank type reactor operating with Materials Test Reactor (MTR) fuel elements, including 20% of Uranium-235.

Peru has additionally benefited from IAEA technical support in the areas of nuclear and ionizing radiation for uses in the medical, industry, and other civilian sectors. The country remains strongly committed to ensuring nuclear and radiological security and to following international protocols for the physical protection and proper management of all facilities handling nuclear and radioactive materials.

Peru has signed, ratified, and enforced the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in September of 2017, December of 2021, and March of 2022, respectively.
