Country Profile: Bangladesh

BASIC FACTS

The People’s Republic of Bangladesh is located in the South Asia, in the northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent. Bangladesh is surrounded by India to the west, north, and east, and shares a border to the south with Myanmar. Bangladesh is a parliamentary republic that gained its independence in 1971.

Capital: Dhaka

Currently Bangladesh does not have any operational nuclear power plants. However, in November 2017 Bangladesh broke ground on its first nuclear power plant, located in Rooppur. The plant consists of two units and is scheduled to come online in 2023-2024.

Bangladesh has one research reactor in Dhaka used for neutron radiography, neutron scattering, and radioisotope production.
