BASIC FACTS
The Republic of Singapore is a sovereign city-state located on the southern end of the Malay Peninsula. Established as a trading post in 1819 by the British East India Trading Company, Singapore was under British or Japanese rule until after the Second World War. Today Singapore is a highly diverse, densely-populated country with one of the best-ranked standards of living in the world. Singapore is a parliamentary representative republic that gained its independence in 1965.
