BASIC FACTS
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean. Independent as a member of the Commonwealth since 1948, Sri Lanka is a semi-presidential representative democratic republic. It has an ancient history and rich cultural heritage in the region, especially among the majority Buddhist populations. A quarter-century of civil war between the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ended in 2009.

There are no nuclear research reactors or power plants in Sri Lanka.
